The market wall along with all of the towers was completed around 1605. The exterior of the Linz Gate originally carried that date, as well as the coats of arms of Emperor Rudolph II, Melk Abbey and the market town. The quarter of town in front of the gate was called Oberer Markt (Upper Market), Hafnergasse or ‘Gallows Village’ (Galgendörfel), as the path leading to the gallows was here. The once-important brewery was also located here. The Linz Gate was torn down in 1852.
